What should I do when I get into an accident?

Call the police. If it is safe to do so and you are physically able, take photographs of the scene, including the vehicles involved.  Seek medical attention.  Take photographs of any injuries (I.e. bruising, scarring, swelling(need body part comparison))

Do I talk to the insurance company?

You can report it to your insurance company, however, you should not give a recorded statement or discuss the nature and extent of your injuries.

The other driver’s insurance company called me, should I talk to them?

No, let your attorney speak with them first.

Is there maternal preference in Maryland in child custody cases?

No

The parent of my child is withholding my child from me, what should I do?

You should consult with an attorney as soon as possible.

Can I get custody of a child that is not mine, but I have been taking care of?

Third-Party custody allows non-biological parents to gain custody of children.  You should consult an attorney to see if your situation applies to the requirements.

Is it true that in a divorce my spouse is going to get 50% of my assets?

It depends on a variety of factors.  Maryland sits as a court of equity.

My child’s parent withholds the child if I don’t pay child support, can they do that? 

No

The police want to question me about a crime, but I know I didn’t do anything wrong, so shouldn’t it be okay for me to talk to them?

No, you should not allow the police to question you without the presence of an attorney.  You should immediately invoke your right to an attorney.

If I am pulled over by the police and they want to search my car, should I give them consent?

No.  If they do not have the probable cause necessary to do so, you should not allow them to search.

I received a DUI, is that something that I can handle on my own?

It is not advisable for you to do so, as the consequences for DUI’s and other related offenses bring severe penalties, including but not limited to, jail time and the loss of your license.
